Cannabis for Chronic Pain: A Veteran’s Perspective
A groundbreaking 2025 Veterans Health Administration study reveals a transformative shift in pain management approaches. Among 52 surveyed veterans, 40% reported using cannabis, with pain relief being the primary motivation for 81% of users. The study uncovered multiple benefits beyond pain management—62% used it for sleep improvement, while 43% found relief from PTSD and anxiety.
Perhaps most striking is that one-third of veterans have replaced traditional prescriptions with natural alternatives, including cannabis. However, a concerning trend emerged: less than 55% discussed their cannabis use with healthcare providers, creating potential risks for drug interactions.
This research highlights cannabis’s evolution from alternative treatment to mainstream medicine, particularly among veterans managing chronic conditions. As acceptance grows, the focus shifts from questioning cannabis use to ensuring safe, informed access and support.
